From New York Fashion Week to Miami Swim Week, accessories and clothes continue to be a staple in how many people identify themselves. Pushing aside trends that stem from Coachella and sponsored influencers wearing a brand’s latest collection, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! likes to encourage fashionistas to do things a little “weirder.”

Believe it or not, we wanted aspiring designers to create an original, wearable design made from everyday items not typically used in garment making. Our Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium in Grand Prairie, Texas, hosted a Trashy Fashion show on April 14, 2018. The challenge was simple: create a wearable design that was constructed from trash and recycled materials. Many attended the event to see just what these fashionistas conjured up! We judged based on creative use of materials, the model’s runway walk, garment mobility, and overall design.

Our 19 incredible entries used everything from black construction trash bags to newspapers!

Winners of Trashy Fashion

Our Grand Prize winner was Ikkendra Oliobo, and she received a $1,000 cash prize. Her design was made from silver Diet Pepsi cans, muslin fabric, eyelets, plastic, glue, and shoelaces. The dress is a woven fit and flare featuring a sweetheart neckline, adjustable tab cami straps, and a backless design with a full circle skirt and an invisible zipper.

The inspiration for her party dress came from her grandmother’s love of Diet Pepsi. It should come as no surprise that she dedicated the unique dress to the incredible women in her life: Her grandma, mother, and the little girl inside that continues to remind her to have fun each and every day.

The first runner-up was Stephanie Salas, who received a $500 cash prize. Her design was a mermaid-style dress made out of black construction trash bags, detailed with rope, CD/DVD pieces, plastic grocery bags, and bottle caps. The funky headpiece was created with a coat hanger and black masking tape.

The second runner-up won a $250 cash prize. Three separate contestants recorded the same score, leaving a three-way tie. Contestants Nyla Evans with a newspaper dress, Melissa Branson with a grocery bag design meant to emulate a wedding dress, and Lien Ma with a toilet paper party dress  were all third-place winners!

Art On The Side

Our outrageously weird fashion contest included an art competition. David Welty won a prize for his entry in this category. His design was created with pencil shavings and guitar strings.

About the Trashy Fashion Winner

Ikenndra Oliobi, our first-prize winner, is an up and coming women’s wear designer, studying fashion design at The Art Institute of Dallas. Fashion has been more than a passionit’s embedded in her DNA! By the age of five, after seeing a commercial for the Art Institute, she staked claim to her dream. Ikenndra employed her mother’s help to mail a letter with the future intent of attending the Institute. It was a commitment that she has fought to keep, but will receive her bachelor’s degree from AI Dallas this September.
