July Activities at PA National Park

Jul 11, 2016 | 10:32 AM

July has arrived and here at Prince Albert National Park, things are busy! Recent Canada Day celebrations in Waskesiu were a huge success with great weather and a record-size crowd coming out to join in the festivities.

In the upcoming weeks the park will be home to a number of exciting events and activities that we wanted to share with you. Please circulate information with colleagues, tourism partners and the public.

1.        Waskesiu Children’s Festival – July 16th

A fun-filled day for the whole family with over a dozen activity stations throughout Waskesiu. Pick-up your passport at any station and explore face painting, crafts, puppet shows, fire truck tours, games, and performers between 10:00am and 2:00pm. Participate in at least 6 activities and you’ll be given half price entry to the Twin Pines Theater movie showing July 16th.

Don’t worry about packing food! In addition to the restaurants throughout Waskesiu, a continental breakfast will take place from 8:00am to 10:00am at the Chamber of Commerce and the Waskesiu Volunteer Fire Department will be running a fundraiser BBQ at lunch!

Children’s Festival is free with your paid park entrance!

See the attached poster for more information:

2.        Celebrate the rest of the weekend by joining park interpretive activities. Learning about bison just became a toe-tapping good time. Take in the Bison Will Rise Again musical July 15th at 7:00pm on Waskesiu’s main beach. For the more hands-on types, Build a Bison will run July 16th at 3:00pm. Also on the evening of the 16th will be the Celebrate with Song sing-along campfire at the main beach at 7:00pm.

3.        Waskesiu Heritage Museum – ArchaeoCaravan July 15th

The Saskatchewan Archeology Society will be at the Waskesiu Heritage Museum July 15th from 9:00am to 5:00pm with displays and hands-on activities for all ages; rock art, pottery making, ceramic reconstruction, and pretend bison hunting with an atlatl. A what? An “at-el-at-el.”

Found an arrowhead, hammer stone or other artefact back home? Bring it along and an archaeologist will help identify it for you.

While you’re at the Heritage Museum, check out the shack tent, fire tower, and other displays.

4.        Wild Orchids Now In Bloom!

All sorts of plants and wildlife call Prince Albert National Park home! Come explore the park and watch for bison, bears, elk, deer, and foxes. Plant lovers are also in for a treat as the park has a variety of wild flowers. A number of orchids have been spotted along the 7.2-km Fisher Trail, and Saskatchewan’s provincial flower, the Western Wood Lily (Prairie Lily), can be seen along the Scenic Route, Highway 263. Remember to keep a safe distance from wildlife and take only pictures of the things you see home with you.

If you have any trouble identifying a plant or animal, take a picture and bring it to the park Nature Centre, open 10:00am to 8:00pm daily.

5.        Mark your calendar; The Three Island Paddle & Music Festival is July 23rd. Head out to the Hearts Marina for a full day of paddling and excitement. Activities include: a pancake breakfast, a BBQ, live music, & paddle challenges.
