Battlefords Gymnastics Club sees strong turnout for summer camp program

Jul 14, 2021 | 2:18 PM

The Battlefords Gymnastics Club has been keeping busy this summer, with a range of themed summer camps for children and youth in the community.

The club will be hosting seven weeks of summer day camps this year, running Monday to Friday throughout July and August, and wrapping up at the end of next month on Aug. 27.

The camps are designed for ages 5-10, and each feature a unique theme such as ninjas, superheroes, animals and more; with corresponding games, crafts and skills training that relates to the theme of the week.

With nearly 130 kids registered across the summer this year, office administrator, Natalie Elliot said it’s been great to see the popularity of the club’s summer camps continue to grow from where it was even just a couple of years ago.

“I’ve been with the club for about two years now, and the first year I started with the summer camps, some weeks they only had two kids and some they had three, so they are definitely growing in size,” she said. “We’re very excited that’s been the case, and very proud of our staff and all our coaches for their dedication they have had in making it possible.”

While the club was able to host some summer programming last year, the lifting of provincial COVID restrictions earlier this month has allowed them to have larger groups of youth each week among other changes this year.

Masks are also optional for the summer camps now, though parents can still chose to have their child wear their mask at the camp. Strong cleaning regimens of the equipment and common areas also remain in place.

Elliot said the club is very grateful for the community support of their summer programing, which allows them to continue to offer their summer camps as an outlet for youth to stay active during the season while having fun and learning about gymnastics.

Other programming

In addition to the summer camps, the Battlefords Gymnastics Club’s competitive group has also continued their training through July and August, with summer ninja warrior and parkour classes going on as well.

The competitive season will run September to June, while the rec program is divided up into three sessions, with a fall, a winter and a spring session. Fall registration for gymnastics will open Aug. 10.
