Never-ending Training Camp for Riders Continues

August 9, 2016 - 9:47am

The Saskatchewan Roughriders continued their 20 game exhibition season with a 35-15 loss to the Calgary Stampeders that was notable for…wait, I’m sure there was something.

The Rider defense disappeared after three quarters and the offense was like a 1977 Pontiac Pariesienne with a rebuilt motor that moved in fits and spurts. The special teams were notable for Johnny Mark, a former Rider draft pick who was drafted into duty after Tyler Crapigna injured a hamstring on the last practice before flying to Calgary.

Season is over Rider fans, why not Barbeque

August 3, 2016 - 9:56am

It seems to be a consensus that following the embarrassing show that was the Riders in Montreal, the 2016 season is effectively over and we will be watching auditions for the remaining 13 games for roster spots on the 2017 team.

Of course now the Riders season is over and they are getting calls from the CFL front office regarding not maintaining their ratio in the BC game, the question has to be asked if Chris Jones was ready to take on the duties of a general manager.

But I digress…

Riders Hit a New Low - Out Coached by Jim Popp

July 30, 2016 - 8:54am

I was lucky I had to work the night the Riders sank faster than the Titanic in their 41-3 loss to the Montreal Alouettes.

I watched the replay at 3 a.m. after seeing the score and it was like driving past an accident scene over and over and not quite believing what you were seeing. The Riders had a week to prepare for this game and Montreal last played on Monday. Yet it seemed it was the Riders who had just one hour to prepare for the game.

At least the Riders are in the driver’s seat for the first overall pick of the 2017 draft.

Machiavelli Has Nothing on the Saskatchewan Roughriders

Not all the games in the CFL are played on the field.

It’s kind of funny now that Brendan Taman is no longer in a management capacity, the amount of breaking stories have gone down in the CFL.  If you are smart and monitor social media, you can stay ahead of the mainstream media although some people like Justin Dunk, managed to live tweet the 2016 CFL draft long before TSN announced the picks.

No Water Shortage as Riders Feed on Bitter Tears of Redblacks, Blue Bombers and Eskimo fans!

July 26, 2016 - 9:11am

It was in retrospect a perfect football weekend!

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers started things off by doing what they do best: get beaten by a gong by the Calgary Stampeders. It seemed almost right away after the game, the Bombers announced Matt Nicholls would be the starting quarterback against Edmonton on Thursday, like that might help with Winnipeg’s lack of blocking.

Wait ‘til Next Year???

July 18, 2016 - 4:11pm

In 2015 the Rider season was over by half time of the first game. In 2016 it may have lasted until half time of the third game.

This might be considered progress.

The Riders 40-27 loss to the BC Lions is being rationalized by saying the ankle injury to Darian Durant, which may keep him out one, two or three games, took the momentum away from the team that built up a 23-10 half-time lead and then faltered in the third quarter with back-up Mitchell Gale.

Riders are Not Afraid to Pull the Trigger on Big Moves

July 4, 2016 - 11:43am

Just before I start this week, thoughts and prayers are with the family of former PA Pen Warden, Jim O’Sullivan.

I got to know Jim fairly well in Prince Albert and his connection to the CFL came about 20 years ago when I got word that one of his daughters was getting married to then Rider Coach, Don Matthews. I phoned Jim to ask about the wedding coming up on the weekend and he asked me not to make it a big deal.
