Town to have rainbow crosswalk for Pride Week

Jul 19, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Town of Battleford will have a festive rainbow-coloured crosswalk to show its support for the upcoming LGBT Battlefords and Area Pride Week events this year.

The issue was raised at council Monday after Kelly Waters, one of the Pride Week organizers, submitted a letter to the town asking for permission to create the rainbow crosswalk and to hold some type of event for the occasion.

“Council approved in support of the Battlefords Pride committee to put up a flag for Pride Week and to work with them to find an appropriate location to put in a rainbow crosswalk,” Mayor Ames Leslie said on Wednesday.

The mayor added Coun. Doug Laing will be working with the Pride organizers as well as town staff to plan for the project.

Leslie said the town will also hopefully hold an activity to honour Pride Week, which runs from Monday, Aug. 20 to Sunday, Aug. 26. The Pride parade is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 25 in North Battleford.

“It’s not necessarily the (crosswalk) or the flag itself; it’s that council wants to have a very inclusive and diverse community,” the mayor said. “This is just one more aspect of making sure that we include them as part of our inclusion and diversity within our mandate of council and the Town of Battleford.”

Kelly Waters of the local Pride Week committee said she is thrilled with the town’s support.

She said making a Rainbow Crosswalk is a “fun symbol that other communities have done, so we want to be part of it.”

Waters added she hopes a business might step up as a sponsor to cover the cost of the paint. She is also encouraging people who want to volunteer to contact her if they wish to help.
