Beavers shot at the NSRBL title ends

Jul 19, 2018 | 12:00 PM

It’s the end of the road for the Beavers, after falling 15-4 against Unity last night.

The game started off slow, with pitcher Kyle Palmer and the Beaver defence shutting down the Unity offense. In the bottom of the second, the Beavers hit a two run single with two out to kick off the scoring.

But that was the end of the Beavers leading in the game, as Unity stepped up to bat in the top of the third. The Cardinals scored five in that half, then two in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-2 moving into the bottom of the fourth.

The Beavers were able to score two in the bottom of the fourth, to edge closer at 7-4, but that was when the wheels fell off.

In two innings, the Beavers surrendered eight runs, and the game ended in the bottom of the sixth with the mercy rule.

Paul Cubbon, catcher with the Beavers was nearly at a loss for words after the game, but summed up the loss perfectly.

“Really, the ball wasn’t bouncing our way,” he said. “Couldn’t come up with timely hitting, they did, that’s baseball. They played better than us.”

The first-year Beaver said he had a great year with the team, and was happy to have come to play with North Battleford.

The focus now switches to Provincials, which the Beavers host from August 10-12. Even though the loss hurts right now, Cubbon and the Beavers know what they’re going to have to do.

“Hopefully practice a couple times a week, get some ground balls for guys, some fly balls,” he said. “Get some batting practice in the new cage. Just practice, that’s all we can really do now. Just wait and hope that we’re ready.”

With the win, Unity moves to the second round to take on the Border City Blue Jays. In the other second round matchup, Wilkie will take on the Lloydminster Twins.
