A man is facing charges after a shooting in North Battleford early Saturday morning.

Battlefords RCMP responded to complaint of a person arriving at Battlefords Union Hospital suffering what appeared to be a gunshot wound. When police arrived, they determined the victim had a serious injury from what appeared to be a small-calibre firearm. The victim was later transferred to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon for treatment and is now recovering, RCMP said.

Police later received another complaint of shots fired at an apartment on Winder Cres. RCMP said their investigation revealed a person who was known to the victim and other individuals inside the apartment discharged a firearm. Later that day police arrested the suspect, who was identified as David Soonias. Police said a number of firearms were recovered and seized as evidence.

Soonias, 28, is facing charges of discharging a firearm with intent, discharging a firearm while being reckless, aggravated assault, possession of a restricted firearm, possession of a restricted firearm while prohibited, and possession of weapons contrary to a prohibition order. Soonias was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear in Battleford Provincial Court on Monday.
