No opposition to residence at airport

Jul 5, 2018 | 5:00 PM

There has been no opposition from the public on establishing a secondary residence at the local airport in North Battleford.

No one spoke up during a public hearing on the matter at a recent council meeting. North Battleford City Hall will be making its decision on a proposal to add accessory dwelling units as a discretionary use in the North Battleford Cameron McIntosh Airport district at an upcoming meeting.

The issue came about following a request from an area resident. A local businessman and pilot wanted to establish a secondary residence at his hangar at the airport, both for his own convenience and to be on site which could reduce the potential for vandalism — a past problem.

The amended zoning bylaw still needs to return to council for second and third reading before it can be approved.

Council received two letters in favour of the issue. Airport Supervisor Fran de Kock stated he didn’t have any concerns, citing the vandalism issue could be curbed by it.

The second letter came from the city’s Utility Services Director Stewart Schafer who indicated he has no concerns about the unit as long as the applicant abides by a number of restrictions. City administrators said they will develop a policy reflecting the proposed conditions related to the bylaw and present them for council to consider at an upcoming meeting.

The city currently permits the development of an accessory dwelling unit in conjunction with flying schools, and flying clubs.
