It’s time to beat the heat in the Battlefords

Jul 5, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Battlefords area will be looking at some pretty high temperatures in the upcoming days.

Friday is supposed to kick off the warm stretch, with a forecasted high of 35 degrees Celsius, and with the extreme heat people need to take extra precaution.

Warning Preparedness Meteorologist from Environment Canada Terri Lang told battlefordsNOW some of the precautions that should be taken.

“It looks like we’re going into an extended period of warmth,” she said. “I don’t know if we’ll get that 35 on Friday, but certainly over the 30 mark. With those extreme temperatures they do need to take those precautions, like you’re drinking a lot of water, got your sunscreen on, seeking shade and coolness when you can.”

Within the next week, from Friday to next Thursday, temperatures are going to be around the 28 C mark.

“Studies have shown that when it comes to heat people can take a day or two of heat but when the temperatures aren’t cooling off overnight the bodies aren’t able to get repaired for the next few days and over an extended period of time, it really takes its toll on the human body,” Lang said.

A heat alert may be issued for the area as the week progresses, but it is a little early to tell.

“It won’t be a record, which is 36,” Lang said. “And since North Battleford is in the northern portion of the heat alerts, I do foresee heat alerts within the next weekend, which people need to watch for.”

Even on these hot summer days, precautions can still be taken to be safe outside. Things like yard work, and outdoor activities can still be done, just at specific parts of the day.

“It’s a good idea that if you need to do something, make sure you do it in the cooler times like in the mornings or the evenings,” Lang said. “People think the maximum temperature is when the sun is the highest, that’s not true. Maximum temperature is usually around 4 or 5 o’clock because when the sun comes up, heats the ground and the ground absorbs the heat, and then re-admits the heat.”

Visiting places like malls, movie theatres, restaraunts, and anything with good working air conditioning will be crucial if you have to spend an extended period of times outdoors. Taking children to splash parks and pools will help them beat the heat moving into next week.
