UPDATE: Funnel cloud advisory ends

Jul 3, 2018 | 10:55 AM

The special weather advisory for the area has now ended.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather advisory for the area which may result in the development of funnel clouds this afternoon.

The areas affected are the R.M.’s of Battle River, Buffalo, Cut Knife, Loon Lake, Meadow Lake, Meota, Mervin, Turtleford and the Battlefords.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak land spout tornado.

Land spout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

The public is advised to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, Environment Canada advises to take shelter as the clouds can appear with little or no warning.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of land spout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.
