New mural gets financial boost

Jun 28, 2018 | 5:00 PM

North Battleford neighbours in the Meighen Crescent area have put their talents and energies together to create a new street mural.

The City of North Battleford assisted with the project by providing the paint and supplies.

“This was done completely by the neighbourhood,” said Ana Conly, a planner with the city. “It was a community-driven mural. They contacted us wanting to paint the street mural, and we just supported them in the process.”

The Meighen Crescent neighbours held a potluck block party as well, and created the first street mural of the year on June 22.

Resident Candice Hawkey designed the mural — a multi-coloured sun. She added this is the third block party the neighbourhood has had. She said it has been great for the neighbourhood.

“We get to meet our neighbours, and for my son  he gets to meet the other kids on the street,” she said.

Conly said the city is encouraging residents to collaborate on projects that have a positive impact on the community.

Neighbourhood projects, such as creating street murals and hosting block parties, are being supported by the city with the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) group.

“The city has been investing a lot of money into the CPTED, and one of those main principles is bringing the community together to help create more vibrant communities, but also to get to know our neighbours,” Conly said. “That’s what these kinds of community-driven projects do.”

Conly said the presence of a colourful street mural in a neighbourhood also has a traffic-calming effect, so there are many benefits.
