Battlefords Disc Golf Club preparing for Tournament

Jun 28, 2018 | 8:00 AM

The Battlefords Disc Golf Club is getting set for their 2018 Canada Day Disc Golf Tournament.

The tournament starts at 10 a.m. on Canada Day, and will see a wide variety of players out competing. Evan Zimmer, founder of the Battlefords Disc Golf Club, said the event will draw competitors from across Saskatchewan, and even other provinces.

“We have several players from Regina, Saskatoon, and a couple from Alberta,” Zimmer said. “We draw in a lot of participants from out of town. We have a reputation for putting on an excellent event, and we try to keep up that reputation.”

The tournament will be open to anyone, Zimmer said, regardless of experience.

“It’s open to all ages and skill levels,” Zimmer noted. “We have divisions for everything from seasoned veterans to people who have never played before. Same with the kids; anyone under 18 can come out and play for $25. We encourage everyone to come out and have a great time.”

There are pretty big expectations moving into the competition’s second year, and Zimmer says they’ve received a lot of interest so far.

“It’s a tough weekend for us because there’s a lot of competition,” he said, “but we’re doing okay and hoping to have around 30 competitors out there.”

The main competition will run until around 4, Zimmer said, and then they will also be holding a free Night Glow Tournament. The registration begins at 10, and he said everyone is excited about the event.

“It’s free for anyone to enter and it’s been furnished by our sponsors,” Zimmer said. “We have some lights for the disc basket targets, lights for the tee boxes, and to people’s discs. We’re going to go out in the pitch black and play some disc golf. We did it last year and it was a lot of fun. We’re hoping to have just as much or more fun this year with it.”

The club is hoping the tournament draws a large crowd, Zimmer said, and anyone can attend, even if they’re not participating.

“Spectators are welcome,” said Zimmer. “Come out for the festivities and watch some of the best players in the sport compete for prizes and see what the sport is all about.”
