North Battleford City Hall approves land sale for new hotel development

North Battleford’s City Hall heard some good news about plans for a new hotel development when council met Monday night.

The city sold about two acres of land for $1 million for the development of a Holiday Inn in the southeast area of North Battleford.

“It’s exciting,” Mayor Ryan Bater said following council’s meeting. “That whole part of the city has been seeing a lot of development.”

This will be the second new hotel going up in that area of North Battleford, Bater added, as a Comfort Inn & Suites site is currently being constructed on Carlton Trail.

“We just passed a resolution to agree to sell the remaining portion of ‘Parcel East’ for $1 million to a company that intends to build a hotel on that property,” Bater said. “This is part of what’s now called the Yellow Sky area of North Battleford.”

The city’s building permit totals for May amounted to $11.3 million for new commercial builds. A large part of that figure was for the new Holiday Inn development, which is valued at about $10.5 million.

The new hotel will be situated directly north of the mini-mall where a number of retail outlets such as Bulk Barn are already located.

“That’s why council chose to undergo a master plan for that part of the city; because we knew that there was development,” Bater said. “We were aware of upcoming developments like this one and we wanted to make sure we have a plan. Especially when you add hotel properties, you add a lot of traffic, so it’s going to generate a nice-sized market for other entities as well.”

According to the city’s planning and development department, the project is expected to start mid-July.
