North West College scholarships reward student success

Jun 24, 2018 | 9:11 AM

North West College students showed they have what it takes to make the grade both in and outside the classroom, being rewarded with a number of valuable scholarships.

A total of 36 students received about $53,600 in completion scholarship awards at the North West College’s annual Partnership Appreciation ceremonies in Meadow Lake on June 19 and in North Battleford on June 20.

Interim President and CEO Melanie Roberts said the exit scholarships were decided on a variety of criteria, not only academic success, but things like leadership efforts and dedication to pursuing post-secondary studies at North West College.

“The Canada 150 (scholarships) were based on students that espoused the values of North West College, along with excellent citizenship,” she said, adding an example where the scholarships for Innovation Credit Union were based on students pitching ideas to improve their community.

Many area businesses and individual donors support the scholarship program. In addition, according to the college, a grant from the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship program, through the Ministry of Advanced Education, also benefits the program by matching funds the college receives from local industry partners and private donors.

North West College awarded students with more than $100,000 in scholarships in total for the 2017-2018 academic year.

“We have lots of community donors,” said Roberts. “It’s amazing the support we’ve received from our communities.”

North West College said in a media release the scholarship program aims to help reduce students’ financial barriers so they have a better chance of reaching their goals.

More than 300 local businesses and industry leaders partner with the college on a range of initiatives to help students succeed, such as by accepting students for work-placement programs.
