Nutec and North Stars make donation to SJHL Assistance Program

Jun 20, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Nutec Embroidery and the Battlefords North Stars made a huge contribution to the SJHL Assistance Program Wednesday.

The North Battleford Company donated 100% of proceeds from clothing and apparel sold during their “HumboldtStrong” campaign to the program, totaling $27,740. At the beginning of the campaign the company planned to only donate the profits, but as the campaign and the support grew, Nutec owner Peter Frey said he knew all the proceeds should go into the fund.

“It’s an honour to be able to donate this amount of money,” Frey said. “I need to thank the community for the support. We supplied the shirts, we supplied the clothing and the hoodies, but it was the community that bought them. It’s really the entire community that is giving this money to the SJHL fund.”

The April 6 crash which devastated the Humboldt Broncos organization took a toll on everyone, Frey said, including the people at home in North Battleford. The sense of community connected with the Broncos shone through when it came to supporting the campaign.

“It wasn’t just Humboldt suffering; it was the whole SJHL family,” Frey said. “We deal a fair bit with the North Stars and we talked to them; it was the players and other personnel here that need assistance to deal with this. It was big for us to be a part of that.”

Caitlyn Gray, Marketing and Office Manager for the North Stars, knew that the team and community was going to step up to the plate when it came to supporting the Broncos.

“Everyone was affected by it, and we knew we had to do something to help,” Gray said, “Nutec stepping up was a big help. I think it should be a big help for everybody and I think the league is really going to appreciate it.”

The support for the team and the Assistance Program continues to grow, even on top of the $15 million that was raised through the Broncos’ GoFundMe crowdfunding page.
