Plenty of variety in Dekker Centre’s new season lineup

Jun 18, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Battlefords residents have plenty to look forward to during the upcoming season at the Dekker Centre, which just released its new lineup of artists.

Some of the highlights include performances by Heather Rankin, the Ennis Sisters, and Joey Landreth.

“We have 15 shows, and six of those shows are Juno award winners,” General Manager Moe McGuinty said.

He said some of the impressive artists coming to the local stage include David Vest and Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne.

“These guys are out-of-this-world players,” McGuinty said. “It’s variously called boogie-woogie, or stride piano, or barrelhouse piano playing.

“It makes you jump up and down in your seat,” he added with a laugh.

Another talent on the lineup he was thrilled about booking is April Verch, a grand-master fiddle champion. Hailing from the Pembroke, Ont. area, McGuinty said she is making quite a name for herself.

“Rolling Stone magazine last year said she was one of the 12 best acts they saw at MerleFest,” McGuinty said, referring to one of the largest annual music festivals in North America.

Another popular group coming to the Dekker Centre is the band Whitehorse, which McGuinty described as contemporary adult rock.

“They get a lot of radio play across the country,” McGuinty said.

He encouraged Battlefords music lovers to start making plans to take in some of the shows.
