NBCHS class learns ins and outs of beeswax business

The Entrepreneurship 30 class at North Battleford Comprehensive High School took a different approach to their project this year.

The students set up a business called “NBeezWax,” which offers beeswax products they made at the school. The class packaged and sold them both at the school and around the community, and are currently wrapping everything up and closing their business. All of the profits they earned will be donated the local SPCA, according to entrepreneurship student Brianna Barclay.

“We heard that they want to build a new building,” Barclay said. “I saw a post on Facebook that they have lots of cats and they didn’t have much cat food, so it’s always a good one to donate to.”

Barclay wasn’t yet sure how much would be donated, but she said she knew it was the right place to donate the funds.

During the project, students learned about every aspect of running a business including marketing, processing, packaging, branding, financials, and the day-to-day sales operations. They created lip chap, hair paste and lotion as their primary products out of the NBeezWax line. The class sold products at school as well as the farmers market, the Student Hall of Fame Awards for the Living Sky School Division, and the central office for the school division.

Barclay said she knows that the project is going to help her and her classmates moving forward into the future.

“We definitely learned that when you have very little product, everyone wants it and when you have tons of product it’s harder to sell,” Barclay said. “Also how hard it is to market and really get your name out there … Really the marketing aspect was a great thing to learn, and also how much time and effort goes into having a great business.”
