CJNB welcomes new voice of Battlefords North Stars

Jun 1, 2018 | 10:00 AM

When listeners tune into  North Stars broadcasts this upcoming season, they will notice a new face behind the microphone.

Marty Martinson will join the CJNB/CJNS team as the new play-by-play announcer for the local SJHL team. Martinson, who spent last year as the radio voice of the OCN Blizzard in the Manitoba Hockey League, said he is looking forward to coming to the Battlefords and following a team with such a storied history as the North Stars.

“I am looking forward to this next chapter of my broadcasting career and the chance to call the action for the Stars,” Martinson said, “I’ve heard lots of great things about the North Stars fans and how passionate they are about the team, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Martinson, who is originally from Regina, replaces Nathan Kanter who is pursuing other hockey opportunities.

This is just one of several changes that North Star fans will see this year when the hockey team starts the season in September.

On the ice, veterans like Captain Layne Young, Connor Manegre, Troy Gerein and goalie Taryn Kotchorek are now overage, while several other players such as Parker Smyth and Garan Magnes have opted to pursue other hockey opportunities.

For the third consecutive year, the Stars will start the year with a new coach and general manager with the departure of Brandon Heck after one season at the helm.

Catch all 58 regular season North Stars games this season with new host Marty Martinson on CJNB/CJNS.
