Leaving a Legacy for future generations

May 31, 2018 | 12:11 PM

Everyone wants to leave their mark on the world; a lasting legacy for future generations to see.

As author Jim Rohn once said, “All good men and women must take responsibility to create legacies that will take the next generation to a level we could only imagine.”

Have you ever imagined what your legacy will be?

If you want your legacy to truly have an impact on people in your community, you may want to consider a Leave a Legacy gift to the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation.

“There are so many benefits to the Leave a Legacy gift to BUH Foundation,” said Executive Director Claudette McGuire. “A gift such as this would greatly benefit our community’s health and well-being for years to come.”

There are many types of Planned Giving that you can consider, McGuire said, including gifts in wills which offer benefits beyond the personal satisfaction of giving and knowing it will be directed according to your wishes.

BUH Foundation Executive director Claudette McGuire stands beside the Living Legacy Board located within the BUH Wall of Fame on the main lobby of the hospital.

Sharon Spence, of Aquadeo Resort Village, knows all too well the importance of BUH Foundation and its impact on the community. Spence, an executive director of the foundation, said she felt a Leave a Legacy gift was something she needed to include in her will.

“I worked on most of the projects like the Festival of Trees, so I had a deep compassion for BUH Foundation and the support of enhanced healthcare they are providing our community,” Spence said. “I just knew it was important to me to support BUH Foundation so I left a Leave a Legacy gift in my will.”

Spence noted the importance the BUH plays in the fabric of the Battlefords and the surrounding communities.

“We are so blessed with a facility like Battlefords Union Hospital,” she said. “You may not have had to use it, but everyone knows someone who has, and the people who work there are top-notch. “

Claudette McGuire of the BUH hopes everyone considers making the BUH Foundation a benefactor of their will and become a Leave A Legacy member.

When you choose to Leave a Legacy gift, either through a will, life insurance policy or RRSP, McGuire said it’s important to let BUH Foundation know so your generosity can be recognized on the Donor Wall.

“Our Donor Wall is quite a feature in the main lobby of the hospital with many people every day stopping to take a look at it,” McGuire said. “There is also a Living Legacy column where donors who have informed us they are planning to gift us in their estate can be recognized.”

When considering a Leave a Legacy gift, McGuire said you do not have to disclose the value of your donation and the BUH Foundation understands that circumstances may change.

“It’s also important to remember that you get to choose where your gift goes, whether it is the Palliative Care Unit, the Emergency Department, Chemotherapy Unit, or other areas you have an affinity to,” McGuire said. “The choice is yours.”

Spence said a Leave a Legacy gift is similar to building a house; you can’t build a solid structure without a firm foundation.

“When you contribute to BUH Foundation, you strengthen that foundation, which allows it to remain strong for generations to come,” she said.
