Finlayson Island bridge study will review all options

May 30, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Review work on the Finlayson Island Bridge is expected to start this June.

The agreement with Associated Engineering which will complete the review of the work necessary to repair the bridge’s south side, will come at an estimated cost of roughly $48,000, based on figures obtained from a recent council meeting.

“A few of the aspects they will be looking at is to understand can an eight tonne-rating still be applicable, viable on this bridge,” Mayor Ames Leslie said.

Once the work is completed, council expects to review the firm’s report this September.

Chief Administrative Officer John Enns-Wind confirmed in his report both the north and south sides of the bridge were due for inspection.

“The whole goal is to put facts on the table for council to assess,” he said.

Enns-Wind said the firm will take physical samples from the bridge and look at the concrete’s condition and whether or not there’s rot.

The report will also indicate what work needs to be done to ensure the south side of the bridge is able to meet its current eight-tonne weight restriction in place for vehicle traffic. (The north side of the bridge is used for pedestrian traffic only.)

It will also look at the option of closing the bridge entirely for public use, as well as the proposal of replacing the entire bridge completely, both north and south sides, to be a pedestrian-only bridge.
