Treasures craft show debuts in North Battleford

May 11, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Some crafty people will be in the city this weekend, thanks to a newly established craft show.

The Battlefords Treasures Show is taking place at the Twin Rivers Curling Club May 11 to 13, and a range of artisans from Montreal to British Colombia and across Saskatchewan will have their items for sale at the event.

Randy Cross and his wife Sharon coordinated the Treasures shows in their home province of Ontario for years. The Handcraft Festival was included in their circut until it was cancelled last year. Randy said the couple was disappointed to hear the news, because they both enjoyed interacting with people in the area, so they decided to bring their homegrown show here.

“There’s leatherworks, pottery, clothing, jewelry, metal works, home decor. It’s a real mix,” Randy said. “People come and they find treasures. This is just the first of many years I hope. We’re really excited about it.”

Gwen Fehr is a beeswax artist from Hague, who used to live in Battleford. She took over Joan’s Beeswax Candles in 2011 from its original owner, and said she is also happy to hear there’s a new local show to replace the Handcraft Festival.

“I enjoy the people, it’s really nice to be able to come back here now this year,” she said. “I enjoy being able to be in Saskatchewan. I make beeswax candles and I’m proud to say that all my wax comes from Saskatchewan beekeepers, with my main suppliers up in Meadow Lake, Groots Honey Farm. It’s very nice to be able to support the local communities.”

Fehr got into the craft by helping Joan, the former owner, and it quickly turned into a passion for her. She was in accounting for years, but the beeswax business fascinated her and she started doing it full time.

The show runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
