Play coming to N.B. takes a look at life in northern Sask.

Living in a small town can sometimes force a person to become a Jack or Jill of all trades, even they’re quite ready for the task.

That’s one of the many themes explored by a play coming to North Battleford next week. Playwright Nathan Howe said the production, called The Wild Dog Waits On The Concrete Path, was inspired by an elementary school principal in Jans Bay who he met on a play tour in 2012. The man was the school’s leader, and he also ran the lunch program, the community hall, and served as the fire chief in the area.

“It just kind of struck me,” Howe said. “I started writing a story about someone like me who would be approaching his job who maybe wouldn’t be quite ready. I thought it would be an interesting character study.”

The production previously ran at festivals in Vancouver and Saskatoon. Howe said he hopes the show creates some empathy within audiences. Howe used to portray the main character himself, but the role was recast with Danielle Roy for the North Battleford production, which is presented by Embrace Theatre and Theatre Howl. He said the cast is looking forward to performing in North Battleford.
