Battlefords Disc Golf Club runs introduction program at local school

Apr 27, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Notre Dame School’s gymnasium in North Battleford was a noisy place Thursday, and it wasn’t because of the usual activities.

The Battlefords Disc Golf Club invaded the gym to run an all-day program, introducing youths of all ages to the growing sport, on pajama day no less.

“What we’re trying to do is show the kids in the Battlefords that disc golf is a thing that they can do at a low cost,” Evan Zimmer, a founder of the local club, said. “Get them outside and unplugged. Off the screens and into a sport that is accessible for all of them.”

Zimmer brought  Adam Bolig, Dallas Pawliw, and Zach Renwick, three other members of the club, to the gym to help out. The kids first learned the basics, including how to properly throw a disc, before practicing their new skills in a couple of different games. At the end of each session, everyone stood around the basket and threw their discs at the same time, which often resulted in an outpouring of noise from the participants.

“Things have been going smooth. The kids are really receptive to it, so I think it’s nothing but aces,” Zimmer said. “We did some youth programs in the field house over the winter. This is the first school that we’re getting into, and we’re hoping to do our rounds on a regular basis through all of the schools in the Battlefords.”

The club was formed in 2015, and Zimmer said he has seen exponential growth ever since.

“Always growing, always expanding. More people coming on. More great things happening with us,” he said. “We’ve had a pretty sharp trajectory and I don’t see it stopping any time soon.”

While the club is certainly growing, Zimmer said most people in the Battlefords still aren’t aware of the sport, which is why they are out running their programs.

“Most people, when you say disc golf, they look at you cross-eyed. They don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. “We have been changing that. We’ve noticed a lot more awareness for the sport everywhere across the community in the last few years.”
