The man involved in a Jan.5 shooting in downtown North Battleford has received four and half years in prison.

Clayton Favel appeared in court Monday morning, facing 19 charges related to the Jan. 5 shooting in North Battleford, which included a victim being shot through the mouth.

The Crown described the incident and said Favel fired shots outside the Travelodge Liquor Store in North Battleford and was targetting a rival gang member. The Crown said Favel fled in a stolen car towards Red Pheasant First Nation. According to the Crown, he was pursued by police and rammed a RCMP vehicle during the chase, which ended in his apprehension at the First Nation.

The Crown also claimed Favel’s actions were gang motivated and the judge agreed. The judge said he was handing Favel a harsh punishment for his actions and told him to reevalute his life and change it for the better while in prison.

The most serious charge Favel faced was attempted murder, to which he pleaded down to aggravated assault and the judge accepted. Favel was handed two years and 15 days for the aggravated assault charge, one year for possession of a prohibited weapon, one year for flight from the police and three months for possession of a stolen vehicle, among other charges. The sentence includes the 165 days Favel has already served in custody.

Favel was also given a lifetime firearm ban and will be prohibited from driving for three years after his release. The judge also stated Favel has no chance at probation.
