Weekend storm could cause hazardous driving conditions

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Battlefords, which Environment Canada said could lead to extremely hazardous driving conditions.

The watch was issued just before noon Thursday, but according Meteorologist John Paul Cragg, the Battlefords shouldn’t get hit until the weekend.

“We put watches out further in advance to highlight the upcoming risk,” Cragg said. “It isn’t until late Friday and into Saturday morning that the Battlefords will start to see heavy snow.”

Cragg said the area can expect about 20 cm of snow, but the wind gusts of 40 to 70 km/h will wreck havoc on highway drivers. Visibility on the roads will be severely reduced Friday night and most of Saturday, Cragg said, depending on the route the storm takes.
