Enjoy it while it lasts; mild weather to end by mid-week

Jan 8, 2018 | 7:51 AM

Mild weather for the first weekend of 2018 offered welcome relief from the brutal cold snap, but you might want to soak up the January warmth while you can.

Monday and Tuesday are expected to be pleasantly warm with daytime highs hovering around the freezing mark.

Unfortunately, Environment Canada meteorologist Mike Russo warned that the warm weather is not going to last.

“We’re going to be tapping into some northerly winds and those winds (will be) ushering throughout Saskatchewan and daytime highs plummeting well below seasonal for this time of year,” Russo explained.

The daytime high for Wednesday is expected to get down to -17 C, and fall down below -20 C for the rest of the week.

Russo said the cold is going to last at least until the weekend.

There is a storm system developing over southern Alberta and tracking east across Saskatchewan.

“We are expecting snow well to the north of Regina and Saskatoon for that matter, though the central portions of the province they could see about 10 to 15 centimetres of snow on Tuesday,” Russo said.

The southern region of the province, including Regina, should be in the clear for snow but there is a risk of isolated showers including the possibility of freezing rain.
