Vigil honours shooting victim’s memory

Nov 17, 2017 | 9:18 AM

Family, friends, and community members gathered Thursday evening in Meadow Lake to remember Kegan McCallum by participating in a candlelight vigil walk. The 17-year-old died in hospital Monday, Nov. 13 after being shot in a home on Meadow Lake’s west side.

A 15-year-old male suspect was arrested in North Battleford yesterday, and is charged with manslaughter, public mischief, and possession of a prohibited loaded firearm. He will appear in court on Monday, Nov. 20, and cannot be named due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Organizers planned the event as a means to ‘take Kegan home’ to his family’s residence on the east side, as he was fatally shot at a friend’s house. Before the walk began, a drum group played a pair of memorial songs.

His aunt Amber Barthel said he would often visit the home and frequently asked to be picked up afterwards.

“Monday night was the only night he didn’t ask to get picked up,” she said.

His other aunt Tara Barthel said the family was touched at the amount of people who showed up to provide support.

“We’re very appreciative having everybody show up for him,” she said.

His mother Leianne said she was thankful for those who braved the cold to carry a flame to honour her son.

“It means lots that they were there for us.”
