Candidates Koch and Wyant look at crime, legislation

Nov 2, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Some candidates in the Saskatchewan Party leadership race are looking for new ways to address crime and improve legislation to deal with residents’ concerns.

Alanna Koch and Gordon Wyant are proposing ideas to make communities across the province safer.

Koch, former deputy minister to the premier, is proposing new policy called A Vision for 2030: the Development of Growth Plan 2.0, to help improve the local area’s well-being and reduce crime.

After speaking to local residents and parents Wednesday in North Battleford, she said she heard that rising crime is a significant concern in North Battleford.

Domestic violence, gang-related crime, thefts and violence were some of the concerns she said she heard from locals.

“We all want to feel secure in our homes and communities,” Koch said. “The government’s responsibility is to make sure the right programs and services are in place to address our safety and well-being.”

The candidate said people need to be able to access a variety of health-related and educational services since a vulnerable population in society is more at risk of turning to crime to meet their needs.

Gordon Wyant, MLA for Saskatoon Northwest, and the former justice minister, is proposing a comprehensive review of legislation related to rural land-use management to deal with conflicts.

“We have a number of uses of legislation,” he said. “Certainly, practices have changed in this province over the last number of years. The legislation needs to be looked at to make sure there are compatible land-uses in this province.”

Wyant said there have been many complaints from farmers about snowmobiles crossing their land, and destroying crops that have been planted in the fall.

He said farmer’s rights and responsibilities need to be protected.

“It’s time to address this often controversial but critical issue around property rights,” he said.

Wyant said his proposed legislation review would also serve as another step to complement the work of the province’s task force to deal with rural crime.
