Getting to know new North Stars head coach Brandon Heck

Aug 25, 2017 | 12:22 PM

Newly named Battlefords North Stars head coach and general manager Brandon Heck got involved in coaching in a rather unique way.

Several years ago, he was playing senior hockey against the coach of the bantam AAA Camrose Red Wings at the time, when a “mini scrum” broke out.

“He knew I was living in the Camrose area and…we were paired up together and we got talking,” Heck explained. “He mentioned that the other coach for the bantam team was leaving to go to UNB and he asked if I was interested and that’s how I got into it.”

Heck transformed the Camrose program.

When he took over the head coaching position in 2013-14, the team was coming off a season with just one win in 33 games. In his first year, he improved them to 15-12-6. Last year, they went 23-8-5.

Now, he’s hoping to instill the same type of player development with what will be a young North Stars team this year, after a veteran-filled team helped them win a Canalta Cup championship last season.

In the video below, Heck answers some off-ice questions so that fans can get to know him a little bit better before training camp begins next week.
