Discs fly in Centennial Park over the weekend for provincial championship

Discs were flying all around Centennial Park over the weekend as North Battleford held the Saskatchewan provincial disc golf championships.

Roughly 60 competitors from cities all over the province including Regina, Saskatoon and Watrous came together to compete in the tournament for various prizes including a cash prize of $600.

Evan Zimmer, one of the tournament directors, said all the clubs didn’t just compete, but also collaborated in putting the tournament together.

“I would say it was hands down the best disc golf tournament Saskatchewan has seen to date,” Zimmer said. “Just having that many people actively involved in [organizing] really made it a successful event.”

Competitors played three 18-hole rounds and a “Super 9” round, which consisted of nine holes of massive lengths, in their respective divisions based on skill level and age.

The divisions included juniors, masters, recreational, advanced, and the open division. Additionally, the tournament hosted two women’s divisions for the first time.

On lunch breaks, players also competed in skill competitions for additional prizes. Nine-year-old Rhys Farries from Saskatoon won the longest putt competition for a cash prize of $100.

“The fact that [Farries] took the longest putt… just goes to show you that anybody can come out here and win prizes at our tournaments,” Zimmer said. “That’s kind of how the community of disc golf is in the sense that it’s open to everybody.”

With the provincial championships completed, Battlefords Disc Golf Club members will still play regularly at both the Centennial Park and Fort Battleford courses.

Zimmer encourages anyone who is interested in the sport to contact the club for information on how to get involved.
