Keeping grandfather’s memory alive by giving back

Aug 2, 2017 | 8:00 AM

To say Shae Maunula and the organizing committee of the Second Annual Brian Maunula Memorial Junior Golf Tournament are excited for this year’s event would be an understatement.

That’s according to his mother Jaime Maunula.

“Shae is very excited about this year’s tournament,” Jaime said. “He’s always got different ideas, suggestions and prize ideas so he is very involved for sure.”

The now seven-year-old came up with the idea to have a fundraiser to honour his grandfather Brian Maunula who was a pillar of the Battlefords area and an avid golfer. Brian died in March of 2016.

“The seed was planted last year when Shae participated in the Wayne Pruden Golf Tournament,” Jaime said. “He wanted to do a fundraising golf tournament that saw children raising money to help other children.”

The Second Annual Brian Maunula Memorial Golf tournament will be held at The Rustic Nine Golf Course on Sunday, September 24.

All junior golfers aged four to 14 are eligible to register for the tournament. The registration fee is $30 and all funds will also go to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Last year’s tournament exceeded expectations with a field of 48 competitors raising $18,000.

“This year’s goal is $20,000,” Jaime added. “This year we are able to add another tee off time so we will be able to accommodate 60 golfers.”

Registrants will also receive a pledge form to raise money for the Children’s Hospital as well with the top three fundraisers winning prizes donated by Canadian Tire. Registration and pledge forms are available on the Brian Maunula Golf Tournament Facebook page or can be picked up at the Rustic Nine Golf Course or at CJNB/CJNS on 100 St. in North Battleford.

The deadline to register is Thursday, Sept. 7.
