Blood donor clinic in urgent need of support

Jul 31, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Canadian Blood Services has issued an urgent appeal to residents of the Battlefords and area to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life.

Historically the summer months are a challenging time for the Canadian Blood Services. Travel, holidays, family activities and changes in routines means fewer donations during the summer.

Organizers and volunteers will be at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford today from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. accepting blood donations to help during this crucial time for Canadian Blood Services.

Given its short shelf life, the need for blood is constant. For example, cancer patients, accident victims and those with blood disorders all depend on blood transfusions every day.

“The Battleford area has always been great in their support of the blood donor clinics,” Tracy Smith, Regional Director of Canadian Blood Services. “While most of our appointments are booked up again we still have some availabilities remaining so I encourage you to book an appointment or drop by today.”

Smith said all blood types are needed but a particular need remains for O negative blood because it is the only type compatible with other blood types.

She added while they are grateful for the support of their regular donors they also welcome new donors to drop by and ask questions during the clinic.
