Fatal shooting near Blaine Lake under investigation

Jul 7, 2017 | 10:12 AM

The Saskatoon Police Service will be conducting an independent investigation after a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound — an incident where members of the Blaine Lake RCMP attended.

At about 1:45 a.m. on July 5 two members from Blaine Lake RCMP Detachment responded to a report of a distraught man with a firearm in a rural area South of the Blaine Lake community.

When they arrived at the location, they found a man in possession of a firearm.

The man then discharged the firearm, which resulted in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was then taken to hospital in Saskatoon where he was declared deceased. The RCMP is not releasing his name.

The RCMP members were not injured in the incident.

The Saskatchewan RCMP has asked for an independent, external investigation into the circumstances related to this incident so the investigation would be impartial.

As a result, the Saskatoon Police Service will conduct the investigation. The RCMP has also asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer for the case.
