Alleged home intruder asked woman for coffee before fleeing

Jun 6, 2017 | 6:38 AM

A Unity woman got quite a surprise early Saturday morning when she awoke to find a man she did not know entering her bedroom with a special request.

The man allegedly asked the woman to get him a coffee, and left the room so she could get dressed. The woman managed to take a photograph of the man with her phone, and when he left her bedroom, she locked herself in the bathroom and called her relatives to come help her. She then called 9-1-1.

In a release to media, police say witnesses reported the man leaving the home in an older blue sedan.

The suspect allegedly stole alcohol and cash from the home according to the woman, who provided RCMP with a picture of the suspect and a description of the vehicle. RCMP members circulated the picture among local detachments and members were able to determine a possible suspect.

At roughly 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon, police responded to several reports of a blue sedan driving at erratic speeds on Highway 16, near Waseca, with a ladder hanging out of the trunk.

Maidstone RCMP located the vehicle on the side of the road approximately 10 kilometres East of Maidstone. Police say the lone male occupant of the vehicle matched the description of the male from the break-in. Officers located some of the property believed to be stolen from the woman’s home in Unity.

RCMP has charged John Nathanial Porter, 62, of Lucky Lake Saskatchewan with impaired driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime and possession of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Porter is scheduled to appear in Maidstone Provincial Court on July 11. None of the allegations against him have been tested in court.
