Battleford post office returning downtown

May 24, 2017 | 1:15 PM

The local post office is coming back downtown after a much-needed restoration.

The town of Battleford’s post office building on 22nd St. W. is getting a new life after two investors decided to purchase the 116-year-old building to restore it.

Canada Post plans to open in the location downtown by November. The goal is for staff to occupy the space by Christmas.

The building has been sitting empty since the fall of 2015 when a bat infestation led to staff members relocating to a temporary spot at 35th St. W.

Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie confirmed local investors Jesse Crozier and Cassandra Germsheid, with Fieldstone Holdings Corp., purchased the building from Canada Post and plan to renovate it. The investors entered into an agreement with Canada Post so the office can move back to the site this fall.

“I’m excited,” Leslie said adding he shared the news with fellow council members.

“It’s a pretty big success,” Leslie said. “It’s great news for both the town and for our downtown core.”

The mayor added the investment will boost the community.

“They seem very passionate about our community and the town of Battleford,” Leslie said. “I think they wanted to help see the downtown grow and [have] Canada Post be part of it.

“I want to thank Jesse and Cassandra for purchasing the building, and for Canada Post as well staying true to their word to town and council that they would remain downtown,” Leslie said. “Those have both come true. I am very excited to confirm that our post office will be both downtown and operate out of the original post office building.”
