AA Sharks enter playoffs on a roll

Feb 28, 2017 | 11:00 AM

After wins over the West Central Wheat Kings and the Stoon Legends, the Battlefords AA Sharks will enter the playoffs on a three-game winning streak.

It’s the first time the Battlefords has had a female midget AA team and they finish the regular season with a 9-11-4-0 record.

“We are heading into the playoffs with all guns firing,” Sharks head coach Jim Puffalt said. “This team has faced so much adversity since day one back in August and every single athlete has shown tremendous heart, day in [and] day out.”

The Sharks have been led this season by Sydney Geering, Kaitlyn Korpach, and Kendra Leer, who have each recorded over a point-per-game. Geering and Korpach each have 25 points, which is good for eighth and ninth in the league, and Leer has 23, which is ranked 14th in the league.

Geering’s 17 goals are also sixth best in the league.

The back-to-back weekend wins over the Stoon Legends, who sit in third place, came in different ways but there was one commonality: exceptional goaltending.

Each Sharks goalie made 39 saves and got a clutch win – Nikota Gladue on Saturday and Daneka Dickson on Sunday.

The Sharks overcame a 2-0 deficit on Saturday and led the entire game on Sunday.

“They have been playing better and better every day,” Puffalt said. “This was again a total team effort, hard fought, [and] well-earned.”

The Sharks are fourth in the standings, but they do have the same amount of points as the fifth-place Elrose Aces. With them neck-and-neck in the standings, the result is a first-round playoff series against one another.

The Sharks won the season series against Elrose, winning twice, losing once, and tying once, so they get the first game at home.

The best-of-two series kicks off on Saturday, March 4 at home. Game two is scheduled for Monday evening in Elrose.

Puck drop on Saturday is set for 2:15 p.m. at Battleford Arena.
