Students gobble up Co-op’s acts of kindness

Discovery Co-op is sure to make Santa’s nice list this year.

The company embarked in pay-it-forward acts of kindness, and provided turkey lunches for 12 elementary schools in the Battlefords.

This is the second year for the Christmas turkey lunches, according to Leanne Ducommun, marketing and communications manager for Discovery Co-op.

Ducommun said it started a couple years ago when she was asked if they could provide a few food donations for Lawrence School’s Christmas luncheon. Management then came together and decided to provide all the food and serve the students.

“With the first year that we did this the general manager and other managers that went to volunteer really, really liked the impact that it had made, so it was decided from there that we would do all of the schools that following year,” Ducommun said.

“What we do is Discovery Co-op provides all of the food for all of the elementary schools, turkey, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, gravy, stuffing, jell-o, and juice for every student in all of the schools,” she said. “The schools are then responsible for cooking the food.”

Between Dec. 5 and Dec. 16., 12 schools and roughly 3,300 students were fed.

According to Ducommun, the walls at the Co-op mall are filled with thank you letters from elementary students from across the Battlefords. She hopes that the kids pass along the good deeds.

“Of course we speak on random acts of kindness and how it doesn’t matter what age you are, you can make a difference, just the smallest gesture can change someone’s day and what an impact it can make in the community,” she said.
