Fire takes Edam’s General Store

Dec 14, 2016 | 11:00 AM

A fire at the only local grocery store has left the Village of Edam in shock.

Around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 14 one of the store’s former employees, Connie Pollard said she received a text message from her friend asking if she knew the store was on fire.

“I woke my husband up and he came out and had a look after that,” Pollard said. [My friend’s] husband works for the fire department and he was called out shortly after 3 a.m. to come fight the fire.”

According to Pollard, firefighters were still on the scene of the fire in 2000 block of Main Street around 10 a.m. Pollard said that this loss is a big hit to the community.

“It’s devastating,” she said. “The only store besides here is [in] Turtleford which is 20 minutes away. It was really convenient to have the little store and they did such a good job building up their clientele after some previous owners didn’t do so well with it and it’s just pretty devastating.”

She said her heart goes out to the store’s owners, Scott and Lisa.

“They managed the store and they did a lot for the community and really worked with us and we’re really all sad for them,” Pollard said.

So far there is no report from RCMP or the local fire department on the cause of the fire.
