N.B. students to canvas city for food bank donations

Nov 29, 2016 | 9:12 AM

Local high school students will be out across the city to collecting food bank donations from residents.

The students will canvas as many neighbourhoods as they can as part of the annual North Battleford Comprehensive High School food drive. The food drive has been a tradition at the school for more than twenty years, and teacher Andrew Sneddon said it not only benefits the food bank, but students as well.

“It’s important for our students to give back to the larger community they live in and it also shows them the importance of doing some service work,” Sneddon said. “It’s a life skill they can take with them past graduation from Grade 12.”

Donations will go to the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre, which has been having a tough year this year. Executive director Erin Katerynych said demands on the food bank have increased, so there’s an increased need for donations. In 2015, the food bank helped an average of 1,600 people each month and so far this year it’s been averaging more than 2,000.

Sneddon said students enjoy organizing the food drive and going out into the community to meet people and do some good.

“They get to meet different people in our city and all of the people they encountered or will encounter have been very generous with their donations to the food bank,” he said.

Students will be canvassing neighbourhoods in North Battleford Sunday, Dec. 4 and Monday, Dec. 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each day. If they miss a house or someone isn’t home, Sneddon said residents can feel free to drop donations by the school.
