Snow removal bylaw possibly coming to West Battleford

Nov 22, 2016 | 6:49 AM

Residents in parts of Battleford might be responsible for their sidewalks this winter.

During a regular town council meeting Nov. 21, the new mayor and council discussed a proposed bylaw which would require residents in the west part of town to clear the snow from their own sidewalks.

According to Mayor Ames Leslie, it is a matter of safety for motorists on the roads. He hoped not to enforce the fines, but merely incentivize the community until other solutions are found.

“I don’t think it’s the mandate of this council that we’re going to be charging anyone for not cleaning [the snow],” he said. “It’s something we’re asking assistance from the community to help us because today we just don’t have the equipment to clean it properly.”

Leslie said sidewalks in the rest of the town were built to spec, where machines and equipment can easily clear them. Unfortunately, this was not done in the new development.

While the mayor hoped to operate on the honour system, fines will be in place, specifically as it pertains to shoveling snow onto the streets instead of onto lawns. The town is looking to post a map of areas that will be affected by the bylaw in the upcoming weeks to the town website.

The bylaw will be addressed at the next town council meeting on Dec. 5, where council will either pass or amend it.
