AAA Stars drop both weekend games to the Notre Dame Hounds

Nov 14, 2016 | 9:00 AM

The AAA Battleford Stars fell in back-to-back games over the weekend.

Their head coach Jean Fauchon was away helping coach the U-18 female provincial team this past week as the Stars lost 6-3 and 8-1 against the Notre Dame Hounds.

They’ve lost four straight games and sit with a 5-9-0-1 record for the season.

Goaltender Lance Alm was fairly busy in Saturday’s loss, which came just two days after he faced 69 shots in a loss against the Saskatoon Contacts. On Saturday he saw 38 pucks thrown his way, while the Stars managed 26 shots the other way.

The Hounds were on the board first, despite being outshot in the opening frame 13-9. They built their lead to 3-0 in the second but the Stars fought back to make it 4-3 before the second period was out.

Unfortunately their momentum came to a halt in third, as the Hounds scored two goals seven minutes apart to take a 6-3 lead, which held up as the final.

Stars forwards Adam Beckman and Michael Puglia each had multi-point nights in the loss.

On Sunday, the Stars had trouble holding off the Hounds with their starter Joseph Young.

The Hounds scored four goals apiece in the first and second periods to put the game well out of reach before the third.

Mackenzie Donovan scored one in the third for Battlefords, making for a final 8-1.

The Stars were outshot 36-18 in Sunday’s loss and they were also shorthanded 10 times.

The Beardy’s Blackhawks will come to town on Thursday to take on the Stars in their first meeting of the season. The Blackhawks sit one position ahead of the Stars in the standings, with a record of 6-8-0-1.
