Maidstone RCMP warn of paving scam

Sep 23, 2016 | 12:00 PM

The Maidstone RCMP is warning the public about a scam where people offer pavement work.

Police say the detachment received reports of individuals who approached people and told them they are working in the nearby area, usually on the highway, or are travelling through and have left over asphalt or paving supplies. The individuals will offer to pave an area for a “low” price.

In some instances, police say the work is completed for the initial payment but then the individuals request a higher price, often pressuring people into paying. Other times a small down payment is made before the individuals leave and don’t return.

In a release, RCMP say these individuals are very well organized with pamphlets or other handouts and construction type vehicles which match the work they allege to do. RCMP also say a common theme with many of the complaints is that the men have an Irish or a foreign accent.
