Battlefords Community Players preparing for new season

Aug 30, 2016 | 10:03 AM

Theatre season is getting started in the Battlefords and auditions for the Community Players are already underway.

The group had an open house and auditions Monday, Aug. 29 and will again today. Battlefords Community Players executive producer Donna Challis said she’s hoping to see a lot of new faces this year.

“We’ve garnered so many new people who are taking on roles and I hope we’re going to see more of that over the next couple of years because it’s important for a club to keep growing and keep fresh,” she said.

The first play is coming up in October, with another one following in November. Challis said the chosen plays will be announced over the next couple of days.

The club has been active in the Battlefords for roughly 65 years. Challis said the long-standing success is due to the support and encouragement from the community.

“We have a fair number of season ticket holders that buy tickets every year and come to everything we do and their enthusiasm and their encouragement by supporting us has grown over the years,” she said. “I hate to say it, but I remember when we did a play and there was 12 people on the stage and 14 in the audience. Over the years it’s built because the community has supported it.”

She said she thinks the community continues to support the theatre because they’ve been impressed with the quality of plays. The club was the first in the province to do dinner theatre and she thinks people really enjoy the “package deal” of a night out at a dinner theatre performance.

Challis said the open houses and auditions aren’t just for actors, but for anybody interested in volunteering for any part of any play, whether that’s stage managing, set designing, prompting, or hosting. The second open house and auditions are Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Battlefords Community Players theatre in Battleford.
