Report on town road conditions coming

Aug 17, 2016 | 10:00 AM

The Town of Battleford will soon have a complete picture of road conditions throughout the area.

The town’s consulting engineers Catterall & Wright are creating a road condition index for the town in conjunction with Fugro Roadware Inc. Fugro will drive through the town with a pavement surveying vehicle which will track rutting, cracking, distress, and roughness on the roads.

Mayor Derek Mahon said the index will also include reports from under the road.

“As part of this they’ll also be using some ground penetrating radar equipment which will look at the asphalt thickness of each street and the granular thickness on each street. It’s a lot of information that will be gathered and there’s a lot of science which will be brought forth in a report,” he said.

The results of the index will help shape future capital plans for the town.

“This will be information that will be put into a five-year and ten-year capital plan. It will allow the next administration and council to have a more detailed scientific account to look into the condition of all the roads,” Mahon said.

Mahon added the 2012 was the last time a road index was completed, but it was done without this year’s equipment.

The total cost is $78,000 and will be paid for with infrastructure reserves.
