UPDATE: M.L. RCMP detachment commander releases statement on officer’s assault charge

Aug 10, 2016 | 1:26 PM

UPDATE: The interim detachment coordinator for Meadow Lake RCMP says management fully supports a local Mountie’s return to active duty despite a criminal investigation and subsequent charge.

Cpl. Ryan How said Const. Khen Wilkins recently returned to his role after an RCMP code of conduct investigation concluded. Wilkins was arrested yesterday, Aug. 9, and charged with assault.

Despite the charge, How said it does not reflect Wilkins’ efforts as a police officer.

“Meadow Lake Detachment fully supports being accountable to the public. We need to recognize positive police work as well as any mistakes and public scrutiny,” How said in an email. “This was a long process to get to this point today. It needs to be abundantly clear that while a criminal charge is outstanding, Const. Khen Wilkins is a tremendous police officer doing hard work for Meadow Lake. Those two points are not mutually exclusive.”

How added the RCMP will “continue to be open and forthcoming with the public on its daily operations as much as possible.”

Throughout the code of conduct investigation How said Wilkins was on administrative duty.

After an altercation in Meadow Lake, an off-duty RCMP officer has been arrested and charged with assault.

Const. Khen Wilkins was allegedly involved in an incident the night of Dec. 14, 2015 at a Meadow Lake residence.

RCMP were called because of noise complaints and subsequently learned Wilkins had been involved in an altercation before they arrived.

Wilkins was arrested and charged yesterday, Aug. 9 after a code of conduct investigation by the RCMP.

Though he was charged, Wilkins is now on regular duty at the M.L. detachment.

He will appear in M.L. Provincial Court on Sept. 26.
