Habitat for Humanity house needs skilled volunteers

Aug 9, 2016 | 7:00 PM

A duplex being built for two single mothers is in need of experienced home improvement volunteers so it can be completed.

North Battlefords first Habitat for Humanity project is nearing completion. The program helps deserving families purchase a mortgage on a house they otherwise couldn’t afford. The project is eight months behind schedule as both families were supposed to move into the duplex last December.

Ron Braun, the site coordinator in charge of all the renovations to the home, said the project needs volunteers with trade experience to finalize the build.

“I need people I can just give the materials to and leave alone and know it would be done properly,” Braun said. “I’ll be overlooking things but I can’t be everywhere at once.”

Painters, those who can drywall and qualified people who can construct a fence are what Braun specifically needs. He wants to get the house done before winter and although he appreciates the support he’s been getting, he said he still needs more.

“I love it when I see lots of people come out to do work because it shows how much the community cares,” Braun said. “The whole process of Habitat for Humanity is to include volunteers and we understand some can’t put in as much time as others. We want to get it done as soon as possible though.”

Braun said things are moving along pretty well. The north side of the duplex is almost primed and painted while the south side is a little bit behind. Braun expects both to be done in the next two weeks depending on volunteer participation.
