Art alley makes its debut in N.B.

A blank grey wall downtown has been transformed into a work of art after more than a month of cleaning, organizing and painting.

The Art Alley project was officially unveiled Thursday, August 4, on the side of Moon’s Kitchen on 100th St. Lisa Kissick, executive director of Downtown North Battleford, said she was happy to see the finished project and be able to thank everyone who helped make it a reality.

“I think that it highlights some of the local talent that we have in North Battleford. It also is beautifying a space that was once a neglected (dilapidated) space… it’s adding colour and brightness and light,” she said.

The mural is four separate pieces by local artists that blend together. It includes poppies, a railcar, a Saskatchewan landscape and a woman with flowing red hair.

The landscape portion of the mural was done by Frank Leger, who said his piece was indirectly inspired by his job in sales. He traveled for work and said the scenery and wildlife he routinely sees influenced his painting of a lone tree and hawk on the prairie.

Leger said the project has had great feedback so far, as people have stopped him to offer their praises. He said he hopes this mural will inspire more in the city.

“It definitely will brighten up the downtown and make it pop up a little bit more, and it’s better than to have a grey wall,” he said. “It’s going to have… people start appreciating their town a little bit more.”

The Downtown North Battleford group is eager to get started on a new art project, although there aren’t any plans in place yet.
