Youth escapes from prison in Regina

Jul 26, 2016 | 12:43 PM

A youth who should be in jail is on the loose in Regina, and law enforcement didn’t tell the public about it.

According to the Ministry of Justice, a young offender escaped from the Paul Dojak Youth Centre in Regina on Sunday night.

Drew Wilby is with the ministry. He said when it happened the ministry worked with the Regina Police Service and decided releasing that information wasn’t in their best interest.

“In this case it was determined that it was a very low risk to the public, this individual has some very minor charges against him,” explained Wilby.

He said the youth was on remand at the centre, waiting to see a judge.

Because the person in question is a youth, Wilby said the ministry would have had to get a court order to identify the youth.

“In this case there is no way a court would have given us that privilege of doing so,” he said.

Wilby wasn’t able to explain how the youth escaped, but did say two senior staff members in the ministry were investigating. Regina police began looking for the youth immediately, and as of Monday evening the search was still ongoing.

Wilby said people are being encouraged to report it to police of they see a suspicious person.
