Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame to induct speedy centre-fielder and catcher

Power and strength are among the attributes used to describe Bev Hickie, one of this year’s inductees into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in Battleford.

According to a biography provided by the Hall of Fame, Beverley Hickie was a standout player with the South Saskatchewan Baseball League’s Melville Millionaires, playing alongside his cousin Brian during the 1960s.

Hickie had the speed to reach first base on an infield hit, while his arm strength allowed him to provide centre-field coverage described as “suffocating.” He was versatile enough to be moved to the catcher position later in his time with the team, and snuffed out many attempts by baserunners to steal second.

During one game at a senior baseball sports day in the town of Saltcoats, Hickie scored a home run in a park with no outfield fence, crossing home plate as the centre fielder was still getting the ball.
