A family’s journey for justice now has a starting point.

On Monday, friends and relatives of slain six-week-old Nikosis Jace Cantre learned the Crown will seek an adult sentence if the teen is convicted of causing the infant’s death.

Cantre was found injured at a home on Waterloo Crescent the morning of July 3. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Family said the boy’s mother found him bruised and bloody, as though he had been beaten, in his playpen.

A 16-year-old girl, who had allegedly been taken in by the family, is charged with second-degree murder in Cantre’s death.

At a hearing Monday in Saskatoon, court heard the Crown will seek an adult sentence for the accused if she is convicted of second-degree murder.

It’s a move the boy’s family has been calling for since learning of the infant’s death.

The maximum sentence for a youth convicted of second-degree murder is seven years in custody and supervision.

Meanwhile, the defence has requested a 30-day psychological evaluation.

The girl will be back in court late next month.
